Education, Training & Continuing Professional Development


The Public Health Network supports education, training and continuing professional development of public health professionals in Primary Care Trusts. The list below details local and national education, training and continuing professional development opportunities. 

  • Public Health Network - Seminars
    The Public Health Network holds monthly seminars on topics of general interest. These are open to anyone working in Public Health in Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, and Bath & North East Somerset. 


  • Public Health Forums
    Public Health Forums are educational events aimed at sharing expertise of different professionals relevant to the health of the public. Previous topics have included transport, housing, drugs misuse, healthy eating.  Forums are typically held 3-4 times a year. 

    Public Health forums are held in each Unitary Authority area, (one each for the B&NES, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire areas). Each forum is planned in partnership by the Primary Care Trusts, local authority and/or other partner agencies. 



  • Regional Public Health Training Scheme
    The NHS Executive South West has established a comprehensive, integrated training programme for medical and non-medical public health specialists. For information contact Beth Carpenter Tel: 0117 900 2679. 

  • South West Public Health Observatory
    South West Public Health Observatory offers occasional secondment opportunities, with a particular interest in building capacity in information analysts. Contact Helen Cooke, Information Specialist. Tel: 0117 900 2577.

 

  • Faculty of Public Health Medicine
    The Faculty of Public Health Medicine is a professional organisation concerned with training standards and public health practice. It ensures the standards of regional training schemes and runs the diploma and part 1 examination, and part 2 examination, which lead to recognition as a specialist in public health.  

 

 

  • University of Bristol
    The department of Social Medicine runs a Short Course Programme
    on epidemiology and health services research.

 

 

  • Bath Spa University College
    Bath Spa University runs a range of health care related courses at
    Postgraduate Certificates and Diplomas, and MSc degrees in a variety of subjects relevant to public health.
