 Avonsafe (Bristol)

Keeping Children Safer

Avonsafe (Bristol) is chaired by Angela Clarke, the City Council's Service Manager for Safeguarding Children. Regular attendees of our meetings include the Bristol Association of Neighbourhood Daycare, Avon Fire and Rescue Service, Bristol City Council's Trading Standards, NHS Bristol, Frenchay Paediatric Burns Unit, VOSCUR the Red Cross and representatives of the Safer Bristol Partnership.

Our current priorities are to reduce the most serious childhood injuries (emergency admissions). During 2010 we are focussing on burns and scalds from hot drinks and accidental poisoning. We have recently:

  • led the production of the Avonsafe Burns and Scalds Prevention Pack
  • worked with Children Centers and daycare providers to raise awareness during Child Safety Week
  • begun developing a campaign to reduce accidental poisoning from products containing paracetamol
  • worked to raise awareness of home fire safety

You can see the progress we have been making against our action plan HERE.

Helping older people to avoid falling and remain independent

BRISTOL'S 3RD ANNUAL FALLS UPDATE EVENT - 29TH MARCH

This years event will take place at the Council House (12-2.30) on 29th March.

The event will be led by Mark Baker, Chief Executive of Age UK (Bristol), and feature a presentation from Babs Williams on the latest progress with Bristol Falls Project, including progress with establishing the Fracture Liaison Service and other significant developments. A theme of the event will be how community, voluntary, private and public sector services have incorporated falls awareness and case finding into mainstream services. Short presentations of interesting and good practice will fuel a discussion about simple steps that can be taken to identify the 16,000 older Bristol residents who are at risk of falling. The activities will be supported by displays and presentations from organisations who have resources to offer.

THE PROGRAMME POSTED BELOW IS STILL BEING DEVELOPED AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. MANY INVITED SPEAKERS ARE YET TO CONFIRM.
