The Haven is a specialist
primary care service for Asylum Seekers based at Montpelier Health Centre, and
provides initial health assessments for Asylum Seekers who have not yet
registered with a General Practitioner (GP) in the Bristol and South
Gloucestershire area. The Haven service spans both South Gloucestershire and
Bristol Primary Care
Trust and is managed on their behalf by Bristol Primary Care Trust. The staff
includes a Family Doctor (GP), a Health Visitor, a Practice Nurse, and an
Administrative Worker.
Asylum Seekers are offered a comprehensive health assessment, which can include
vaccinations and screening for communicable diseases, after which patients will
be helped to register with a local GP practice. The health assessment record
will be forwarded to the new practice. The provision of this service will
dispense with the need for any further new patient health check, thus
streamlining care for patients.
The Haven is at present hosted by Montpelier Health Centre and will be open on 3
days a week:
8.30 – 12.30 on Mondays, Thursdays, Friday - by appointment only
Asylum Seekers can be directed to the Haven by refugee support agencies,
statutory organisations or they can refer themselves. Please telephone 0117
9703887 or 0117 9426811 for an appointment.
The eligibility criteria are:
- Anyone seeking asylum in the UK who is not yet
registered with a GP in the area.
- Proof of asylum application in the form of a Home
Office letter or an ARC card (Asylum Registration Card.)
- People who have already obtained refugee status in
another EEA country, and those who are not actively seeking asylum in the
UK, are not eligible for The Haven service.
