Consultation story so far

Public and stakeholder involvement is a cornerstone of the way that we have developed the Bristol Health Services Plan (BHSP) and we continue to actively involve the public, patients, special interest groups and other stakeholders in the implementation of the BHSP.

An extensive public consultation began back in 2001 when the local NHS first started looking at how services should be delivered in the future.

This work informed the initial options for new facilities that went out to wider public consultation in 2004, a consultation known as "Help Us Decide".

The "Help Us Decide" consultation process involved hundreds of meetings and focus groups, and involved thousands of people, from the general public, to NHS staff, to local councils and voluntary groups. The following documents detail public feedback from the "Have Your Say" consultation.

In addition to extensive stakeholder consultation, independent advice was sought to report on specific issues, such as transport accessibility to the Southmead and Frenchay Hospital sites.

The development of new facilities has, for the most part, moved from the consultation stage to implementation stage, and advanced planning for many of the new facilities is underway, with several already under construction.

The BHSP was approved by the local NHS at a Joint Decision Making Committee meeting on 14 March 2008. The Committee comprised the Chairs of all Acute Trusts and Primary Care Trusts in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
